Jeśli chodzi o Top 20 domen krajowych, to odnotowaliśmy wzrost mediany cen o 13 proc. rok do roku.

Rozmowa w wersji oryginalnej

What is the dynamics of the secondary domain name market based on your sales data?

Semra Koerner: Looking back at the last 6 months, we can clearly say that consumers invested in high premium names. The more generic the term was, the easier it was to sell. Of course, .com was and will be king of all TLDs. Even with the introduction of New gTLDs users tend to buy premium names under .com or under the respective ccTLD – or better say, they tend to spend more on premium .com’s and ccTLD domains than before.

Where are your buyers from?

SK: You can take a look at our infographic here to get a visual insight about where our buyers are from: https://sedo.com/fileadmin/documents/pressdownload/Half-Year-Domain-Market-Study-2014-Sedo.jpg?session=7ed3683883b2e9eaf27fe58160725685. It shows that sellers using Sedo’s marketplace and the SedoMLS distribution network sold their domains to buyers from 180 countries (in 2014). And we can also confirm that the business originating from China has also increased in the past – and is still increasing. Companies and investors from Asia are specifically interested in short .com names, such as two letter and three letter domains and also .com names including digits such as 8. Nevertheless, this doesn’t impact the European and American market in a negative way. .com is still the most favored TLD for US investors, and for Europe the ccTLDs are the main drivers.

Which TLDs grow and which decrease in value according to your statistics?

SK: Actually the performance of legacy TLDs, those that are established, is more or less stable since years. The mean prices for .com domains have even increased in the last year, and we also saw an uprising in sales prices for .org domains. .org used to be a very specific TLD and mainly interesting for any kind of charity organizations, but in the past it was obvious that the TLD also brings trust and credibility. ccTLDs continued to experience sales growth and proved that that they will remain successful: domain sales such as Kaffee.de for € 100 000 or Chat.fr for € 99 999 are prime examples of this feat. Now more than ever users are more likely to trust businesses if they have their website presence under a ccTLD and they are essential for any company’s expansion strategy. That’s why there was and always will be a demand for domains under ccTLDs such as .de, .at, .fr and many more. I also saw an article about the increasing number of registered .pl domains, so an increase in the trade of .pl domains may happen soon. As for the Top 20 of ccTLDs, there was a year to year growth in the median price of 13%. Looking at some details among ccTLDs, .fr was always performing in the higher ranges, while the trend for .es domains was downwards. The economy crisis in Spain could be an explanation for the change. We also saw a great development for TLDs that have been introduced to the market some years ago, such as .co and .me.

Where do you see the biggest opportunities for domain name investors in the near future? Which markets, which TLDs, what types of investments?

SK: .com domains and ccTLD domains will continue to grow on Sedo’s marketplace in 2015. While most premium .com sales will still need a negotiation either by seller and buyer directly or through a broker that is negotiating for the two parties, most domains in 2015 will be sold as BuyNow domains. Keyword domains will stay valuable, so an investment into domains including one or two keywords would be good. And what never changes: The shorter the name, the better.

What’s your opinion on the future on new domains?

SK: This year we can expect to see the first considerable marketing campaigns to use a new TLD domain which could be a brand TLD or a gTLD. This is a crucial step in order to gain momentum and increase the acceptance of new TLD domains for end users. 2015/2016 is critical when it comes to Google and how they will treat these new gTLDs in their search algorithms. These facts combined with ongoing collaborative efforts between Sedo and our Registry and Registrar partners will be even more important in the future to ensure that the TLDs remain successful. We already saw some great sales among new gTLDs (again, you can reference the Top 10 sales of new gTLD domains in the infographic), and every week there are a few gTLD sales. If you want to be on the safe side, you should wait until you see the first advertising banners and campaigns from bigger brands using a new gTLD. Once the users accept the new gTLDs, their value will increase. Also, there are still dozens of new gTLDs not available yet since they are contested, especially those that are judged as very valuable.
